Bipolar Disorder

Navigating Bipolar Together

Understanding Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar Disorder (BD) is a complex psychiatric condition characterized by significant mood fluctuations, from emotional highs (mania) to lows (depression). Influenced by genetic, brain chemistry, and environmental factors, BD can be extremely debilitating and is quite common. Approximately 2.8% of adults in the United States are diagnosed with BD yearly. Common symptoms include changes in sleep patterns, energy levels, and behavior, as well as delusions and hallucinations. Bipolar Disorder manifests in three types: Bipolar I Disorder, Bipolar II Disorder, and Cyclothymic Disorder, each requiring ongoing treatment.

Types of Bipolar

Understanding Bipolar Disorder Variants

Bipolar Disorder is a chronic illness requiring ongoing treatment. It manifests in three types: Bipolar I Disorder, Bipolar II Disorder, and Cyclothymic Disorder, each with unique patterns of episodes.

Bipolar I Disorder

Characterized by manic episodes lasting at least seven days or severe manic symptoms leading to hospitalization. Depressive episodes typically last two weeks, and manic and depressive symptoms can co-occur.

Bipolar II Disorder

Marked by patterns of depressive episodes interspersed with hypomanic episodes. Major depression is a key symptom, often complicating the distinction between Bipolar I and II. While depressive episodes are present in both Bipolar I and II, depressive episodes are often more frequent and lengthier than those in Bipolar I disorder.

Cyclothymic Disorder (Cyclothymia)

The mildest form of Bipolar Disorder involves mood swings less severe than full mania or depression. Untreated Cyclothymia may escalate to full-blown Bipolar Disorder.
